garage door remotes quit working

Both of my garage door opener remotes quit working. I replaced the batteries and they still did not work. The button in the garage works. I went to a overhead door company and the guy said I more than likely need a new reciever. The garage door opener that I have is an old school Allister Type II. I looked at it but do not know where the current reciever is or what it looks like. A new reciever costs $45 and if that is not the problem, you cannot take it back. This place charges $50 for a service call. Does anyone out there know an easy fix to this problem? Should I get the new reciever and risk loosing $45? Thanks for your replies.

Have you tried resetting the remotes to the door ? It does seem like the receiver board is the culprit as both stop working at once but first try to reset the remotes, might save you $45.

If your operator works from the wall button, a new reciever will solve the problem. just make sure you get one compatible with the remotes you have. It is typically a rectangular box that is attached to the wires that attach to the motor unit.

I would recommend replacing the unit with a new operator myself. Allister operators are getting harder and harder to find parts for, and operators are not that difficult to install, especially if you are replacing an old one. Just take a picture and try to put the new rail in the same position as the old one.

I would bet if you bought the receiver from some company's you could get a refund. call around but the pricing you got seemed very fair.
