How to lay sod on a steep slope?

I have 500 ft2 of sod to lay on a very steep slope. The slope extends up for about 10 feet. How do I lay the sod there, horizontally or vertically? Should the pieces fit against each other or should they overlap a bit?

I would lay it horizontally, more areas for water to get caught, and you want some of the water to get caught so the sod can grow. And no overlapping. Fit the peices end to end and then if there are any gaps, fill in with some topsoil and then add seed to that.

If the slope is as steep as you say it is, drive some sticks onti the sup soil and impale the sod strips on these. That, I think will hold the sod in place until the root system takes over.
