changing out air vents?

My wife & I just moved into a home that was built in 1941. While the furnace is new, the wall vents appear to be original with the home, or at least extremely old.

My wife would like to replace these heavy, worn vents with new, modern ones. Will this disrupt the airflow throughout the home, adding to our heating bill? The furnace is less than 1 year old, and I don't want to mess with a system that seems to work just fine -- for the sake of appearance.

LazyPup has a spectacular aura about
The vents have to be sized to equal the size of the duct, but there should be no problem removing the old ones ard replacing with a modern design with the same size discharge area.
