AC unit with Timer?

I have a question, I have a typical 5000btu window mouted a/c unit. I put a timer on it to run for the majority of the day and be off during certain hours, however the timer turns it off but when it kicks it back on the ac unit does not power up again on its own, I have to go turn it on myself. The unit has some kind of 12 hour timer built in but doesnt really help me with my needs. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong or if anything can be done to get it to power up on its own?
