cold air return

hello, 2 questions here.

1. i have a 1500 sqft basement, how many/big should i have my cold air returns?
2. i plan to bring a cold air return directly from the furnace cold air return duct at the furnace itself. this will feed into a wall 1 feet away, how should i enclosed this duct in the wall?

imeduc is an unknown quantity at this point
Just cut the hole in the wall for the duct. I take it this is near the cold air drop so Id cut in right there near the floor. use a damper register for it so you can close it in the summer some
