need a whole new unit

We are in Houston and our air conditioner broke. The house is over 20 years old so we are just going to replace everything.

We are looking at a Ruud 5 ton 12 seer system and also a Trane 5 ton system. The house is about 2500 sq. ft.

Any thoughts on the Ruud system or is it worth paying for the Trane. I am looking for something that will give us about 12 years without any problems (or is that not possible!).

Id go with the Trane. For where you live Id go for a seer of 14 to 16 for sure. If you stay in the home 10 years go for it. You also with the run time on the AC there ask about a hot water recovery unit on the new AC. this will give you free hot water and at the same time kick up the seer of the unit. Dont know what you have for heat but you could look at a heatpump. Go to http://www.warmair.net and compare fuel cost for where you live
