gravity hot air heat
Hi, I am new here, with a question.
I have an older house with a gravity hot air system. Its actually a system converted from an old coal/wood furnace to oil, in the early 1960's (when fuel oil was about 17 cents a gallon). The burner is installed at the bottom through the old cinder cleanout door. The heat comes up through the floor through one large grate, measuring about 30 X 30 inches.
My question: Is a replacement oil burner still available for this system?
It still works fairly well, but I am getting concerned with its age, as its the original burner, now over 40 yrs. old.
At some time I am considering replacing the whole thing with a forced hot air system, but haven't decided on anything yet, as it will cost big bux.
Thanks for any info.

my first house had exactly what you have. the burner was a becket with a wide dispersal flame cone. the top had a large plenum with four takeoffs distributing heat throughout the house. the only cold air return was a large grate on the first floor. there isn't much you can do for efficiency at this point, keeping the old furnace. you can get pedestal burners to replace what you have - check out Grainger's.
For replacement furnace check out Williamson furnaces.
