[quote=gssharp;19535]I have a Clare Oil Furnace. I have to admit I have not had it maintained as I should. $$. It seems to kick on for only a short time and then off.

please define a "short time"........is it 2 minutes, 6 minutes, 10 minutes, or?
oil burner furnaces (unlike gas furnaces) require a yearly 'tuneup' in order to be efficient and reliable.
if a burner seems to only run for approx 3-5 minutes and then shuts down, and 5 mins later fires up again can indicate a "high limit" lockout, which can be caused by several things, but a dirty air filter can be one of the main causes.
Otherwise with so many other causes(dirtycad cell, sooting, dirty electrodes, weak ignition, etc) it would be best to call in an oil burner 'pro' and get it serviced.Perhaps a payment plan can be arranged .
There's still a lot of winter cold ahead and you will not regret getting this unit put back into shape.Good luck.
