Oil tank inside house

I am in the process of searching for a house to purchase, and one of the ones I like has a boiler that is fueled by oil tank. As I recall, the house was built in the 1950s. The tank is inside the house, in a closet off of the finished basement. In the past I have only encountered homes with oil tanks outside and am concerned about any safety hazards, particularly because I have two small children. Not surprisingly, the basement has the distinct smell of oil.

Any thoughts regarding the safety hazards with such an arrangement would be appreciated. I would also consider having the tank removed and replaced with a gas furnace, but am still concerned if there would still be any safety hazards even after it is removed from the house.

Thank you in advance.

Hube is an unknown quantity at this point
Hi there, and welcome to the forum....As long as this tank is installed properly with the FILL and VENT pipes going to the OUTSIDE ,you should be fine. I have one in my own house and no problem. But, to be on the safe side you SHOULD check with your House Insurance Company as to what they require as to a oil tank. ( As you are considering buying this house, you could make this a "condition of sale") Some Insurance companies INSIST on an "approved" (label) type of tank and a lot depends on the AGE of the tank.. it could be outdated) Lots of luck, Hube
