Your opinion please Coleman Pres II

Friday morning my Coleman Presidential 2 Furnace pilot light blew out. I was able to relight the pilot light after several attempts the match sticks kept blowing out due to the draft inside the furnace. Once the pilot light was lit I turned the thermostat up so the burners would light it would stay lit for about 30 seconds then the burner as well as the pilot light would blow out. We called a guy to come look at the furnace he said the 2 stage valve was going bad and it would have to be replaced for $259+100 for labor and mileage. The guy went ahead and lit the furnace and told my wife that the part would be in Saturday and he would put it in. She asked if the furnace would be ok like that and he said it would. Well later friday evening the pilot light blew out again. Around 8pm I got this crazy idea to try to light the pilot so we would have some heat during the night. This was a bad Idea after getting the furnace lit it blew out again. I lit another match and just as I opened the flip up door to relight the pilot there was a small explosion that did no damage to the furnace but shot out a blue flame accross my face and hands. It singed my hair and eyebrows and burnt my face and hands. I went to the emergency room and was treated for 1st degree burns. Could have been much worse. The guy came Saturday to put the new valve on he charged an extra $95 I asked to have the old valve. He said that he couldnt because if I was to give it to someone and they used it and something happened he could be sued. I didnt argue with him but sounded a little strange to me. He said it was going in the dumpster as soon as he got back to the shop. I was wondering if this sounds strange to anyone else. And was curious if the customer has the right to the old part? Also curious if the price of $450 to vacuum the furnace and put the valve on sounds reasonable to anyone here. Can valves be rebuilt and resold?

$450 to change that valve on a Sat. is not bad. Did it fix your problem? It sounds like some cleaning and adjustment may have fixed it with out changing the gas valve. My company will all ways leave an old part with the customer if they requests it. It’s your part, you own. If you want it you should keep it. He charged you for his valve, if he wants your valve, tell him he can buy it from you. "He said that he couldn’t because if I was to give it to someone and they used it and something happened he could be sued." "Something happened" like it worked just fine, would for sure get him sued. You said "sounded a little strange to me” well its sounds strange to me also and I have been in the business for quite some time.

It did fix my problem-however he cleaned everything before he put the new valve in. I guess Im pretty much out of luck getting my old part back? Thanks for the opinion.

No they don't rebuild valves, they are assembled in clean rooms so as not to contaminate them.
