Oil or Latex

Could you clear up a paint question for me. It used to be a oil primer was best with a latex paint over that. Which is better now oil or latex primer, I think latex has improved but how much?

Thank you,
Fred

Hi Fred,
I was waiting for an expert to comment, but in the meantime. I'll tell you what I discovered in my search for the same answer.

I have installed three 6" X 6" Yellow-wood posts on my back porch. I guess that's the "new" name for teated wood that we used to know as Wolmanized. Anyway, I found that the very best primer is oil based. Especially if the wood has knots or if it tends to run sap a bit. After the primer dried overnight, I then painted over that primeer with a top quality latex semigloss exterior paint.
Now that I've answered, maybe an expert will add his or her professional opinion.[8D]
See ya, Tom
