toilet has no water

I have a toilet problem I haven't seen listed anywhere. What do you do about a toilet that has no water in the tank every once in while? When I flush, nothing happens; nothing at all!

I've had to lift the tank cover, and found the tank completely empty. I lift the arm of the float cup, and it fills, and is fine. I don't hear any 'running' noises, and I've placed food coloring in the tank, and it doesn't show up in the bowl.

Do I replace the float cup, the flap valve, or the whole toilet?!

You should replace your fill valve, sounds like it's getting stuck. You can buy a replacement Fluidmaster fill valve for very cheap and it'll take you less than 30 minutes to install it. Here's a link that shows http://www.fluidmaster.com/products_uses1.html#2
