Septic tank/field maintenance?

We just purchased a home (closed in January) and have have the septic tank back up into the house. After 5 hours with a large rented sewer machine I had to call an excavator and have the tank(s)(?) exposed and then pumped.

What other maintenance do I need to do to keep this thing working to full efficiency?

System description "ANTIQUE" 2 125 gallon "Clay" tanks in series with a 25-30 gallon grease trap for gray water into a 4"(?) clay drain/field tile.

Will a water softener or washing machine discharging into the grease trap hurt/affect anything?

What treatment if any, will help? ridex? robec?

Here are a bunch of links to tell you everything you always wanted to know about septic systems. System designs vary greatly so all this info may not be relative to your particular system. Hope this helps.
