Flint & Walling F07FS32DR softener

This good machine installed at house build 9 years ago. It has adjustments for hardness and runs only when softening is needed. It is a 2 tank with controls on top of the small tank. The other tank is for salt.
Lately, the softening has started to run all the time. Changing the adjustments has no effect. It still uses salt so it must be softening, but I don't know the degree of softening. This is the first sensing softener I have ever had and have no idea what is wrong. There are no leaks or apparent difficulties to me.
What should I do to get this softener performing normally?
