PVC question

I was just wondering, is it necessary to use primer before applying cement when making a PVC connection? Thanks,

Steve

Yes it is necessary to use the primer. The primer not only cleans the surface but it breaks the glaze on the PVC wall so the glue can actually fuse the plastics together.

you may use either the clear or the purple primer as they are both basically the same. The only necessity to use the purple is when a job has to be inspected they require it so the inspector can be sure you used the primer.

Some other key p0ints when running PVC.

By code you are required to position the pipe so the writing on the outside wall can be easily seen for identification. When running in a trench the writing must be on the top of the pipe.

You may not use metal strapping or pipe hangers to support PVC. It must be supported by drilling through the framing, PVC J-hooks or perforated PVC strap.

PVC female thread adapters are prohibited.

While they will all fit together the code strictly prohibits mixing PVC with other plastic pipe or fittings.

All fittings used on PVC water supply must be supply fittings.

All fittings used on PVC drainage must be DWV (Drain, waste & Vent) fittings.
