If you plan to remodel, then have the pipe checked, it sounds to me as if the pipe is rotted, cracked, has loose or missing packing, or broken. It is simple to repair, just get a fernco coupling the same size as the offending pipe, cut the cast iron pipe out, replace with same size PVC. If you are not familliar with plumbing, then I would sugest having a professional do it as it is hard to cut cast iron smooth, and if you try to knock out what is left above it may come crashing down and cause bodily injury or damage to property. Not only that, but it may be tied into something else above that you do not see.
