moen 1225 problem

Greetings. I have a single handle tub faucet and i cant get to the retaining clip in the moen 1225 cartridge. The cartridge is encased in a round metal tube that seems to connect to a plate behind the shower .I do have the escutcheon removed and i cant figure out how to replace this cartridge. Anyone ever see a set-up like this? Thanks for the help.

Per the information in the Moen Catalog the Moen 1225 cartridge requires a special puller tool:

Moen Part number 104421-cartridge puller for Moen 1200, 1222 & 1225 single handle cartridges. MSRP $36.50
