Toilet running problem

Hello-

Quick question - our toilet had never had a "running" problem (ie after you flush, the tank keeps running). Then, the "cord" connecting the flapper to the handle you flush with snapped and I bought a new flapper. Once replacing the flapper, the toilet began to run. You can make it stop running by jiggling the handle or lifting the cover of the tank and manually lifting the black float and then lowering it. any help on how to fix the running problem would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
Allan

evidently it seems like the chain that connects to the flapper is too tight. there must be a minimum amount of movable chain so that the flapper can drop and reseal after the water goes out of the tank. An air bubble is formed when the flapper opens and just before it drops to the closed position. if that chain is too tight then the flapper will not drop by gravity - it just sits there floating on a minimum water level just enough to keep it open.

A second possibililty is that the chain is too long and a link or two of the chain is getting sucked into the flush valve when the flapper closes thus preventing it from sealing properly.

When installing a flapper it is important to adjust the length of the chain by moving the spring action clip to the proper link of the chain. When properly adjusted there should be about 1 or 2 links of slack in the chain when the flapper is down and the flush handle is in the at rest position .

The problem was the latter (chain too long). I made it a bit shorter and problem is solved! Thanks so much!!!
