Toilet Plumbing Problems.

I thought this was going to be an easy project but I was mistaken. I am told by the local hardware store this is odd toilet plumbing. My house was built in the early 80's just to give you a time period. Heres the scoop.

Underneith the floor the plumbing is leaking where the ABS meets the metal ring screwed into the above floor. The floor is rotten and I cannot screw down a new metal ring. It looks like the decking will have to be replaced.

heres a picture

The leak is above the threaded coupler between the large plastic nut and the spacer above it. I am told I should replace that setup with a compression fitting. I have some carpenter/plumber friends coming over to help me on monday. Once the rotten decking is out what would be the steps taken to stop this leak. What parts and pieces would be required to stop this leak.

Thanks in advance.

LazyPup has a spectacular aura about
You stated that you have a carpenter and plumber willing to help you so you really have nothing to worry about here.

From what i can see in the picture the easiest solution would be to cut the ABS drain pipe about 6" to 8" from the closet bend (elbow) and completely remove the existing elbow and closet flange.

Remove and replace the damaged subfloor the cut a hole for the drain pipe.

You then install a coupling, a short length of pipe, a new closet bend and a new closet flange all ABS fittings glued in place for a permanent repair. Total material cost for the plumbing parts should be approximately $25 -$30.
