I put in a 4 foot X 6ft X 7ft high shower. The shower pan is a pretty heavy vinyl product that is fitted to the floor and uses internal "hospital corners" glued to the backerboard and itself and tamped very tightly with a block of wood and a mallet. the floor is made of 3/4 close cell mfb board set on 2X12s on 12 inches on center. on top of the sub floor is cement and sand at the ratio of four parts sand and one part cement with just enough water to make a crumbly dry mix. down it goes on the wooden floor and is screeded to pitch towards the drain and trowelled smooth. then a 2x6 and a mallet and whack it down very tightly. a layer of 1/2 inch hardware cloth and another layer of cement/sand mix. again tamp it down tightly and pitch it towards the drain. let this dry overnight. then the membrane goes on. it is fitted to the drain and bolted up. small stones are placed near the weep holes on the plastic bolted up flange. one more layer of cement and sand again tamped down with a mallet and block. let this dry out overnight THEN you are ready for the thinset and your floor tiles.
