chuckpg3 is on a distinguished road
broken beam in attic

my roof support beam is snaped in half which looks pretty bad actually. my question is.... is there a repair i can do to fix it or is this a case of remove and replace??

use snoonyb's link and see which construction you have. the first diagram weight is distributed to the outside walls and inside load bearing walls. the ridge wouldn't see any appreciable weight as it is divided by 2 or 4 if you have the inside load bearing supports. the floor joists keep everything together.
the cathedral's weight is on the outside walls together with the ceiling joists.
truss roofs apply an engineered formula to divide the loads and apply it to the horizontal cross member which is actually trying to pull itself apart end to end. this is why they say never to drill holes in a truss roof cross member. it weakens the wood as some of the fibers are severed.
