old timer is on a distinguished road
jammed window chain

my window is jammed in the up position. Chain is jammed at pulley. Tried to cut chain ,to take a look at pulley where it must be jammed,OK,simple enough, you think dah. pincers will not cut chain am I that weak? or is their a tool I should be using. old timer

This is a double hung window - yes? Both guide mouldings have to be removed and if its the inner sash, the wooden inserts that seperate the sashes must be removed too. you should be able to tilt the windows out a tad to get access to the twisted chain. on both the left a right lower portion of the casing is a screw which holds an access door to the weights. Remove this and cut off or unbolt the window weight. Now maybe there won't be a down tension and you may be able to untwist the chain letting you remove the window.
