We returned from vacation it was late at night. I flushed the toilet and heard the annoying sound of water flowing. I stopped it manually and we went to sleep that night.
The next day I was going to replace the valve. Then I started thinking. Why did it quit while we were gone? I pulled it apart. The rubber parts were still live after 16 years. I watched it. The float would rise to a certain level and then stick. The float was binding on the tube.
I decided to try something rather than replace it. I shut off the toilet valve, cleared the tank and took a rag and dried everything out. I went to my garage, got some car polish and polished the tube. With a cotton swab I put some on the inside of the float.
It worked. The float slipped up and down easily and has every since that time.
I guess when we were gone some build-up occurred that caused stickiness between the float and the tube.
So, next time you see this problem, give it a shot.
