I have a south-facing, roofed, second story deck over a concrete porch. The posts and beams supporting the deck and roof are Douglas fir 6x6s or larger. I am in the process of adding a new deck railing. (The deck surface is ceramic tile, not wood.)

I live in the mountains of southern Colorado, where the thin, dry, clean air means there is intense sunlight on all the wood almost all year around. In the winter, there is also standing snow on the horizontal parts of the deck railing.

What kind of stain should I use that can protect the wood from the UV and repel the rain and snowmelt? Or do I need a stain first and a waterproof coating on top of that?

A local contractor likes Sikkens stains, which are carried by our local Ace Hardware. Have you had any experience with that brand?

    Thanks for your help.

    Stain

Personally, I like semi-transparent stains. They protect well and look nice. They cover up imperfections in the wood also.
