  • Frigidaire Gallery making nasty ice cubes

A friend of mine had this refrigerator put in about 6 months ago. The plumber ran a new copper line from under the kitchen sink to the refrigerator's ice maker.

Ever since then, the ice cubes have a "crappy" taste to them. The water out of the tap tastes fine, and when he makes a tray full of ice from the tap it tastes fine as well.

Does anyone have an idea of what could be wrong? Thanks for any info you can provide.

There isn't usually much difference between the water supply for the icemaker and water dispenser besides the minimal tubing running up the back of the fridge and the icemaker's 'fill tube' which goes through the cabinet to the icemaker. Unfortunately, without the fridge's model number, I couldn't say for sure on that particular model.

Apparently there is no water dispenser on that model so any component between the house water supply and the icemaker could be the cause of taste problems.

Your friend doesn't happen to have a reverse osmosis (RO) water filter which the icemaker's water line is connected to? There should be no problem using a coper supply line (it is actually preferred by appliance technicians due to its durability) unless it is connected to a RO filter system in which case plastic *must* be used.

Other than that, there may be a problem with the water line, the water fill valve on the back of the fridge, the water line running up the back of the fridge or the icemaker's fill tube going through the cabinet. I don't know how you'd pinpoint which except maybe trial and error, replacing one at a time.
