  • Attic Insulation: Joists are 12" on center

Is 12"-wide insulation made? If not, is there any way to avoid cutting a 24" roll down the length of it? If not, is there any way to make that job easier?

Use blow in cellulose insulation. It will be much quicker and cheaper for 12" on center joists.

Good call, but I'm installing flooring up there

I actually had a nice blown-in layer up there, but my wife wants more storage space... I've always heard that one should use rolled under flooring. What I ended up doing is buying the 23" R-19 and ripping it straight down the middle (actually not nearly as bad a job as I thought). Tomorrow, I'll go back over with a perpendicular set of joists, and another layer of R-19, then put in the floor boards.

Make sure that you don't use "faced" insulation for the second layer. There should ONLY be one layer of faced insulation and that should be down against the ceiling all other insulation should be NON faced (very important).
