Redoing Basement Laundry Room

Okay, we have finally made it the basement for remodeling. We have cinder block walls and a painted concrete floor. The walls have pipes, wires and other various eye sores running down them, so what can I do to mask these ugly features and finish off this space? Specifically, can I use a textured paint to try to even out the divets in the cinder block and make the walls look less like a basement? What can I do to hang stuff on these walls when I get done? My husband says we can sink nails into the mortar so I can hang pictures, etc., but I am worried about this. Any advice? Also, how can I hide the pipes and wires?

Also, I want to replace the gross old sink and fixtures. Is this an amateur job or should I hire a professional? Thank you for your advice. I will try to post some pictures so you can see it all. [?]
