how do i whitewash brick for an antique look?

hi, we are trying to find out how to paint exterior bricks for a weathered look... we were told to whitewash the bricks, and were wondering exactly what this means? also, we were told to use a primer, but were not sure how to do this, since we don't want to cover the bricks entirely with the paint, rather we'd like to stipple....
should we skip the primer? should we use oil or water based paint?

thanks!!!

Todd is an unknown quantity at this point
I'm not sure for outside paint. If someone here doesn't know the answer, I bet your local paint store could tell you. I wouldn't think you should use primer for a white wash look.

I am trying to find the same answer. I do know that you would use a water based paint, as you have to add water to it.What I don't know is what the proportions are..
