resurfacing inset brick wall

We have an inset brick all (no fireplace) that is ugly in the living room. Does anyone have an idea on how to make the brick disappear without drywalling it?

my first thoughts are to use a drywall compound over the whole thing, but lumps may show up. what about some cheap luan wallboard? glue it on then prime and paint it.
