Extension Pole not Locking

I have an extension pole for painting ceilings that locks by use of an off-center cam at the end of the inside pole section. The pole no longer will lock! I have inspected the cam mechanism and can see nothing wrong. I hypothesize that the cam is getting insufficient traction to allow it to jam against the inside of the outer pole section and thus lock. Do you know of any fix that I could make to solve the problem?

try scoring it with a 60 grit sandpaper or use a utility knife and make score marks in the aluminum sleeve.
